Valmorel la belle is a French Ski resort located at Tarentaise in the French Alps and is part of the wider La Grande Domaine region. The resort was built in 1976 and is located in the heart of the Alps, next to the Cheval Noir peak overlooking Mont Blanc and valleys of the Alps. The 2008/2009 season starts on the 19th December 2008 and is expected to close on the 18th April 2009.
How to get there
Chambery – Valmorel is only accessibly by road. The nearest airport is Chambery (53 miles away). For a map from Chambery click here. Most UK airports offer flights to Chambery with ticket prices ranging from around £100-£200 as at October 2008. Airlines flying direct include flybe, Jet2, Snowjet and Sterling, however the airport is small and flights are relatively infrequent.

By Rail – the nearest train station is Moutiers, which is approximately 10 miles away. It is possible to get the Eurostar out to Moutiers between November and April and there is a weekly service operating direct from London. Getting to Valmorel from Moutiers can be achieved through both the Altibus, which runs from various train stations throughout the French Alps, or via private transfer.
Who does the resort cater for?
Valmorel has a wide range of pistes and the wider Grande Domaine region boasts 140 slopes. In total there are 152 km of slopes in the region. There are also direct ski lifts from Valmorel to Doucy-Combelouvière and St François Longchamp.
Valmorel has a diverse range of slopes that cater for beginner, intermediate and expert levels. The resort also welcomes snowboarders and there is a basic Snow Park with entrance as low as 16 Euros/ day.
The resort is family friendly with both a crèche and kindergarten available to look after children from 6 months upwards.
What accommodation does the resort offer?
Valmorel offers a wide range of shops and restaurants for skiers. These are predominantly located on the Morel-Bourg main street. However, as a relatively small resort the après ski is not as developed as in others. The resort has a cinema with 2 screens and spa and sauna facilities are available at the Valmoforme.
It is possible to hire all equipment upon arrival but it may be advisable to book equipment first to avoid disappointment.
There are a variety of other activities including hang-gliding, sleigh riding, air-boarding, igloo experiences, quad biking and snowshoe walking for non-skiers. The resort has also recently built a paint-balling area. The majority of activities occur in the local Lauzière mountain range. The resort has been built in the Savoie style and all the buildings are made of wood and stone. In line with their active environmental policy almost all of the resort is pedestrianised.
The resort does have several local hotels, notably the Hotel Les Marmottons and Hotel Du Bourg. The general standard of the hotels in the region is average and this is not a resort for those looking for a 5* hotel experience.
The majority of the accommodation consists of small ‘hameaux’ chalets, most of which accommodate 2, 4 or 6 people. Accommodation is available at La Vigogne which is situated at the local Pre village approximately 1.2miles away from Valmorel but directly accessible by ski-lift. Chalet accommodation is also available at Chalet Gîte which is only 5 minutes away from Valmorel. It is possible to book private chalets and residences through independent agencies.
