Muhlbach am Hochkonig, Austria
A former mining village situated in Salzburg, Austria, the Muhlbach am Hochkonig ski resort is set in the Hochonigs Winterreich Ski area which itself makes up the wider Hochkonig region, a part of the larger Ski Amade pass. Together with Maria Alm, the second resort in the Hochonigs Winterreich, Muhlbach am Hochkonig is regarded as one of the most beautiful skiing destinations in the Alps.
How to get there
The best way to access the Muhlbach am Hochkonig ski resort from the UK is via Salzburg airport, which is just one hour’s drive from the resort in good driving conditions or via Munich airport which is still within two hours’ drive of the resort. From the airport collect a hire car or take a direct train from either of the city centres to Birschofsofen. From Birschofsofen train station catch a bus to Muhlbach, a twenty minute ride to the resort. Although public transport is not quite as straightforward as hiring a car the route offers magnificent views of the Austrian Alps. Once at the resort, skiers can catch the free ski bus which leaves every twenty minutes from the village centre which transports skiers to the main ski lift cabin. When the snow is good it is usually possible to ski back from the ski lift into the village centre.
Who the resort caters for
Muhlbach am Hochkonig is a small family-friendly resort in Salzburg providing plenty of good safe skiing opportunities and child-friendly amenities including child-care facilities for children aged four and above. It is particularly suited to beginners and intermediate skiers but with good access to the rest of the Hochkonigs Winterreich Ski area more advanced skiers will not get bored.
Muhlbach am Hochkonig has an excellent range of accommodation to suit all budgets, including hotels, alpine lodges and charming self-catered apartments although do check the location carefully before booking as much of the accommodation is up a very steep hill – not always welcome after a long day on the slopes!

Muhlbach am Hochkonig has access to 150 km of marked interlinked pistes with 51 km of easy trails, 84 km of intermediate trails and 15 km of expert trails (one black run, four red runs, seven blue runs and a good choice of green runs.) The slope elevation ranges from 860 to 1900 m meaning there are skiing opportunities for all abilities. Experts will find the biggest thrill on the Ostabfahrt black run, the off-piste trails and the resort’s own ski jump and for boarders there is an excellent terrain park with a half pipe, tables, slides and jumps. The snow cover in the resort is very good until late in spring and even in peak season there is enough snow for everyone to ski comfortably on the well-groomed pistes without the trails becoming too crowded.
For access on to the slopes there is a good number of chair and T-bar lifts and for those wishing to avoid the lifts there are gondolas which offer access to a variety of on-piste trails. A firm favourite with regulars to the Hochkonig ski region are the Skihutten Hochkonig, a series of mountain ski huts dotted across the pistes which offer traditional Austrian cooking without skiers needing to come off the slopes for refreshment.
